Santo Tomás Jalieza, located south of the Central Valleys region of Oaxaca, about 45 minutes from the capital.
We visited the House-Workshop of Mrs. Irma and Mr. Pedro, artisans from that community and collaborators of Mexicanartes
They talked to us about and showed us the process of weaving on a backstrap loom. They have collaborated with us for several years, weaving our Jalieza top, our new Bella dress, and several upcoming designs.
The tools they use for their weaving are primarily cotton thread and the backstrap loom, which consists of a reed comb, a yoke, a machete, and a mecapal (a kind of weaving tool) that is tied to the waist.
Mrs. Irma and Mr. Pedro are wonderful people with big hearts and talented artisans. They, along with their entire family, weave and create spectacular and meaningful works.
Today, we are very grateful to God for allowing us to meet them and collaborate with them.
